Winter light can often be soft and diffused on the cloudy days that are so frequent in the winter solstice. Not every day has a bright, blue sky with white, puffy clouds. Maybe it does on post-cards but not in the real world. But, cloudy days, and chilly winter days can still be a source of great photos that have some feeling and mood.
And sometimes it's a case of knowing where the light, even subdued, will be in your photograph. When the sun, filtered by clouds got behind the lighthouse in Port Dalhousie, it lit up the top of the lighthouse with as much intensity as if you'd turned on the lighthouse lamp.
